Tim Miller – PERFORMANCE! BODY! SELF!
Doors at 6:30pm (free beverages). Free performance / Talk at 7:30pm.Internationally acclaimed solo performer Tim Miller will present excerpts from his work and discuss the role performance plays in constellating identity, emboldening communities, engaging social change, and connecting people with one another.
Hailed for his humor and passion, Miller’s performances have been seen all over the world. He is the author of Shirts & Skin, Body Blows and 1001 Beds. His theatre texts are published in the collections O Solo Homo: The New Queer Performance (1998) and Sharing the Delerium – Second Generation AIDS Plays and Performances (1993).

We’re excited to introduce our new “Salon” series. These sessions celebrate the spontaneity of community by offering freeform time with access to our full collection of synths and drum machines, along with expert guidance. Here, we embrace your creativity, the beauty of happy accidents, and the magic of getting lost in sound while connecting with others and sharing our work. Feel free to sample the gear, and work on your own tracks (be sure to BYO- recording equipment). Whether you’re here to experiment with a synth, dive deeper into topics we’ve covered in class, or simply soak in the atmosphere, this is your time to shape as you wish—whether synths are new to you, familiar, or somewhere in between.

Synth Salon – Sunday Sequencing: Synth + Drums
In this workshop, we will dive into making music with multiple devices simultaneously! MIDI, sync, CV, and gate will be discussed and we’ll show how to use them to get drum machines and synths to talk to each other. Then we’ll create melodies with sequencers and arpeggiators and program beats for dynamic, layered sounds. We’ll review key topics from previous workshops, but newcomers are welcome to jump right in.

Modular synthesis can be daunting to get into but all those wires start to make sense when you break down the simple tasks each one is handling. We’ll start exploring the basics using the free and incredible VCV Rack software then move onto some hardware. Modular standards, history, and past and present artists who utilize modules will also be discussed.

Explore the significance and history of drum machines, and how they shaped the landscape across genres of dance music. Acquire valuable techniques and insights on rhythm construction from both technical and musical perspectives to create your own unique beats.
